Welcome to Torfaen
Torfaen is located off the M4 in South East Wales, 18 miles from Wales' capital city Cardiff and also borders the Brecon Beacons National Park in the north.
The Torfaen area is ideal for a short break - whether you are looking to get away from it all for the weekend, visiting for a specific event, wanting to do some activities, searching family history or just visiting friends and relations.
Torfaen has three main towns:
Cwmbran town centre has a large pedestrianised and under cover shopping centre which is home to many leading high street names. Best of all it has over 3000 free parking spaces and a wide choice of shops all under one roof.
Pontypool town centre situated in the heart of Torfaen has the usual high street shops, a great indoor market and to top it off an historic park right in the middle of town! Not only that but Pontypool Park is home to a dry ski slope, a shell grotto and the Folly Tower!
Blaenavon was awarded World Heritage Status in November 2000. The town centre has come into its own in the last couple of years and certainly makes for an interesting visit! The town's main street 'Broad Street' boasts a good selection of second-hand book shops, gift shops, cafes and also includes the recently opened Blaenafon Cheddar Company which makes and sells Big Pit cheese (which has been matured 300ft underground) and Chocs Away where visitors can make their own chocolates, mmm! The area is also home to the award winning Big Pit: National Coal Museum; Blaenavon Ironworks where BBC docu-drama 'COALHOUSE' took place and the award winning World Heritage Centre.
